WRITING IN CONSUMER ISSUES

THERE ARE TWO WRITING SAMPLES ON THIS PAGE.

WRITING SAMPLE #1

NightmareCompanies.com

I created this internet resource to assist consumers in saving time, money, stress, or worse, by avoiding companies whose behavior, product, or service, is especially poor.  I have personally encountered so many such companies that a website was suggested.

WRITING SAMPLE #2

"ELF/VLF Radiation InfoSheet" for Parents

This is a one page handout for parents whose children use computers. I composed it in 1994, during my employ with Egghead Software, prior to the release of the recent study that seemingly disproves the notion that low-level radiation is a hazard.

Does Your Child Use a Computer?

A Parental InfoSheet from Egghead Software

Dear Egghead Customer,

An emerging body of scientific research seems to indicate that certain electric appliances give off low levels of radiation. These items include electric blankets, alarm clocks, hairdryers, and computer monitors. This very low frequency radiation may be especially harmful to children, particularly young children, whose immune systems are still forming and are therefore weak and more susceptible to damage. We here at Egghead Software, Rt.17 Paramus, therefore recommend that you follow, at a minimum, the following two guidelines for your children if they are using a computer at home or at school:

  1. Refer to your computer monitor manual to insure that the unit meets, at minimum, the Swedish MPRII guidelines for radiation emissions. Guidelines that are even more strict now exist, although they may not yet be widely adopted by the various computer monitor manufacturers. Consult the monitor manufacturer or retail store where the monitor was purchased, if necessary.
  2. Make sure that the child keeps as far away from the monitor as possible during use, consistent with the child's need to be able to see the screen easily, clearly, and without straining the eyes or neck. Remember that ergonomic considerations (Ergonomic means designed for human comfort and safety.) must be part of any proper computing environment, for children as well as adults. There are many books and magazine articles that can be consulted on the topics presented in this advisory page.
